Melbourne Derby (A-League)

The Melbourne Derby is an intra-city local derby in Australia's premier football competition, the A-League. It is contested between the two Melbourne teams in the competition, Melbourne City and Melbourne Victory and was the A-League's first intra-city derby. Until 2014, Melbourne City competed under the name Melbourne Heart.
==History==
With the introduction of Melbourne Heart to the A-League at the start of the 2010–11 season (the Victory having joined the league at inception), the first derby was held on 8 October 2010 at AAMI Park. The match was originally scheduled for 2 October 2010 however due to the 2010 AFL Grand Final Replay occurring on the same day, the match was postponed.
Melbourne Heart won the inaugural derby 2–1, with goals from Alex Terra and John Aloisi. Robbie Kruse scored for Victory. Aziz Behich was sent off late in the second half, but Heart were able to hold on and secure the win. Although the game was an official sell out, only 25,897 fans turned up, well short of AAMI Park's official capacity of 30,050. The second derby on 11 December 2010, attracted 23,059 fans to AAMI Park, and saw the Victory gain their first derby win. Robbie Kruse scored a brace and the Victory finished 3–1 winners.
The Victory had their first home derby on 22 January at Docklands Stadium.〔(Future & Results ) 〕 Victory went up 2–0 in the first half due to goals from Danny Allsopp and Carlos Hernandez, but Heart fought back, scoring a goal in the last minute of the first half, and another just after half time, both from John Aloisi. The match ended a 2–2 draw. This derby was marred by an unacceptable tackle by Kevin Muscat on Adrian Zahra, which earned the Victory captain his second straight red card,〔(Melbourne Victory v Melbourne Heart – Live Football Match Centre – Sportal Australia )〕 and a subsequent eight-match ban, ending not only his season, but his A-League career.
In the third round of the seventh season, 2011–12, the two sides met once again, but were locked for the first time to a scoreless draw. Two months later, a record crowd at AAMI Park saw Heart triumph over their rivals 3–2. Just four minutes into the game, Victory were awarded a penalty, but it was saved by Heart goalkeeper Clint Bolton. Archie Thompson gave Victory the lead eighteen minutes later, but in the 37th minute, Matt Thompson drew the sides level to 1–1, and then scored again and put Heart in the lead just two minutes later. In the second half, substitute Alex Terra increased the Heart's lead to 3–1 after controversially appearing to handball preceding the goal. Victory captain Adrian Leijer's appeals to the referee were dismissed. Carlos Hernandez gave Victory a consolation goal in the last minute of added time.
In the first round of the 2012–13 season, Melbourne Victory again lost to Melbourne Heart at Etihad Stadium in front of a crowd of 42,032. This was John Aloisi's first match as senior coach of the Melbourne Heart and Ange Postecoglou's first senior match as coach of the Melbourne Victory.
A notable incident between two sets of supporters was in February 2011, when four Melbourne Heart supporters were charged with "''conspiracy to falsely imprison a (supporter )'' " after an ultras-style supporter group within Victory's North Terrace, known as ''Horda'' was pictured in possession of a banner of a Heart supporter group called ''Yarraside''.〔http://www.heraldsun.com.au/news/victoria/a-league-melbourne-victory-and-melbourne-heart-fans-rivalry-turns-nasty/story-e6frf7kx-1226000426337〕
In the 2014/15 season, Victory and City met in the Finals Series for the first time, in front of a derby record attendance of 50,873 at Etihad stadium. Melbourne Victory won the Semi Final convincingly with a score of 3-0, with goals from Besart Berisha, Kosta Barbarouses and Archie Thompson.〔(Muscat hails 'deserved' Victory triumph ) Official FFA Match Report, 9 May 2015〕
